About Me

My name is ROD GOODWAY and I was born in Calne, Wiltshire, and have been working and playing in the music industry for over 40 years, having had a minor (top 30) hit in 1965 with my Calne based band The PACK. I later worked with Linda Lewis (The WHITE RABBIT band) and a group previously named The ARTWOODS (St. Valentines Day Massacre) in a LIVE capacity whilst recording an album with underground 'flower power' outfit J.P. SUNSHINE in 1968. In 1970 I joined up with the remnants of The CRAZY WORLD OF ARTHUR BROWN in Dorset (recording under my suggested name of RUSTIC HINGE and being filmed for posterity by the BBC Look Stranger unit) before moving to Bristol and forming MAGIC MUSCLE with my best pal ADRIAN SHAW (who later joined HAWKWIND). After a couple of years Touring I was hospitalised with a mystery liver condition which is now known to be Hepatitis C . However, although I came back to live in the West Country in 1973 in order to re-cooperate, it wasn't long before I found myself drawn into the clutches of the spookily talented ALEHOUSE. (Now featured on your excellent site performing our self-penned 'Space Shanty' number :)
I remember doing TWO sessions for VIEWPOINT, both of them LIVE. Although we played quite a few gigs and did a demo for EMI Harvest (instigated by the late TONY WILSON) and recorded in the BBC studio complex at Maida Vale, we fizzled out in 1975, mainly due to rudderless apathy. We basically needed some strong Management to give us a firm kick up the butt. (Co-Guitarist Dave Gregory eventually joined XTC a couple of years later and it was thanks to him and bassist Tony Green that we actually reunited for a one-off gig in 1990. ) I have also recorded and Toured with a re-formed MAGIC MUSCLE and also The BEVIS FROND Band, as well as with my own experimental outfit ETHEREAL COUNTERBALANCE, including ( in the 21st Century :) several perfomances in the USA. Just released (2009) is a new album called 'Oxygen Thieves' by ADRIAN SHAW & ROD GOODWAY (LP / CD : released by the September Gurls label in Germany) and you can hear a few tracks from this up on MySpace. Another album is in the can but, meanwhile, I look forward to viewing lots more VIEWPOINT TV. Plenty of old familiar faces but also a great deal of priceless visual history and social commentary.
