Provisions were hard to obtain in the New Swindon settlement, involving a muddy trek over more than a mile up tracks to Old Town, so one of the first ventures of the Mechanics Institute was to construct a produce market on the South side of its building. As sources of supply improved elsewhere in the town, this was eventually removed in 1890 to allow expansion of the building
