Regent Street, opening ceremony Savoy Cinema, 1937

The general manager of ABC Cinemas shakes hands with the mayor, Alderman L.J.Newman at the opening ceremony of the Savoy Cinema in Regent Street. Also pictured are the mayoress, the manager Trevor Jones, Alex Houre, A.C.Sparie the superintendent, and mrs Moss. The first film to be shown starred Shirley Temple was called Captain January. There was the capacity to seat 1,775 people in the audience.

Regent Street, The Great Fire, 1904

Regent Street, The Great Fire, 10th December 1904. Both the Swindon and the Great Western Fire Brigades rushed to the scene and were able eventually to control the fire although the Swindon Advertiser reported that there was 'a little unavoidable delay as the Corporation horses usually requisitioned for the fire engines were unfit for work'.
