Then And Now

This section of the site is provided in partnership with The Swindon Society and The Richard Jefferies Society. High Street, Mason Arms, 1905

Long since demolished the Masons Arms was on the site where HSBC now occupies and opposite Newport Street. Note the picture shows the entrance to the Masons Arms stables and yard.

High Street, No.25 The Vintner off licence, 1965

Demolished in the early 1970's for the road to be widened the original building was owned by John Jeffries, grandfather to Richard Jeffries the local auther.

High Street, No.4 E. Smith butchers, 1975

Formerly this building was The King of Prussia public house closed in 1880 with a bad reputation. Then became a butchers shop the building was demolished in 1981 and Eastcott House an office building was built on the site.

High Street, North Wiltshire Brewery Tower, 1947

Looking west from High Street in 1947 you can see the North Wiltshire Brewery Tower (Bowly's). The tower was demolished a few years after this was taken.
