Bridge Street - Communist Party HQ 1960s

This imposing building was No 1 Bridge Street at the junction with Station Road and the headquarters of the local Communist Party. Posters can be seen requesting votes for Ike Gradwell, the candidate and a well-known working mans' champion in Swindon

Bridge Street - Gory display, John Hill Butchers 1873

A very early photograph showing a scene we would never see these days, the graphic Christmas meat display of John Hill, Butchers at 38 Bridge Street in 1873. John Hill is standing behind the trestle table

Bridge Street - Tramcar No 13 1925

Tramcar No. 13 has just reached the passing loop having departed from the Centre for Old Town and the Corn Exchange. Built in 1921, Tramcar No 13 is still in existence in a dilapidated state in a field in Purton awaiting funds for restoration.

Bridge Street and Fleet Street 1904

Opening of the Tram service 22 September 1904. The junction of Bridge Street and Fleet Street was known as Clappens Corner. Eventually became known as 'The Centre'. The clock on Stead and Simpson's served as a standard for the trams. It was 'lost on site' during the 1999 rebuild of the site.

Bridge Street at Fleet Street looking South 1912

This was a tram centre, and the clock in the wall was for the use of trams. The Oxford Hotel on the left was demolished around 1930. The bow window on Walkabout seems to be all that remains of the earlier scene
