Faringdon Road, Postcard Children's Fete, 1906

The picture shows a comic postcard of the families en route to the park for The Children's Fete. This was the most important family social event of the year and it was custom that every child received a slab of fruit cake and a ticket for a free ride on the roundabout. With around 38,000 attending the fete in 1904 and 4 tons of cake to be cut and distributed by volunteers eventually a machine was designed and built specifically to do this by Mr Harvie, manager of the Trimming Shop.
