The Golden Lion pub was at the junction of Regent Street with the Wilts and Berks Canal and was known for a magnificent sculpture of a lion set on a parapet above the door. Later this was removed and placed on a plinth alongside the canal and was a favourite with local children who would clamber on it. A replica was made by Thamesdown Community Arts in the 1980's and can still be seen in Canal Walk. The pub was closed in 1956 and susequently demolished
